Arve
H. Johansen (Mine engineer) welcomes you to new experiences in Astafjord.
|
Astafjord
is 30 km long, and has six arms. The fjordsystem was shaped during the last ice-age
into today's formations by huge geological forces. From the coast the fjord arms are twisting deep into the mountains against the
Swedish border. From the west the fjord is protected by the islands Rolla and Andørja. Andørja
is the most mountainous island in northern Europe with peaks up to 1300 m.
The islands are connected to the mainland by bridge and undersea tunnel.
The
mighty, beautiful and severe nature surrounding Astafjord gives boundless
possibilities for those who want to experience the genuine outdoors. In spite of its
69ºN latitude, Astafjord has a sheltered and comfortable climate -and
Lavangsnes is one of the driest areas in Troms. In the area you find many
ecosystems with distinctive flora. In sheltered spots
one can harvest cherries and grow big sweet strawberries, whilst looking out
over the timber line to the snow on the mountaintops.
The
gulfstream influences the climate and Astafjord offers a rich wildlife. There are
good possibilities for fishing and diving with guaranteed catch. The
fauna is varied, from rabbits and elk to lynx and wolverine. In the winter elk
come down into the gardens, and in spring the reindeer graze down by the sea and eagles
can be seen perched in the trees.
Active
holidays in the wilderness give unique possibilities to understand the nature we are
a part of. Arve, with his expert knowledge, can take you on a guided tour through
the geological processes which have shaped Astafjord.
